In one of the most spectacular finishes witnessed on the course Piastre just got up to defeat Friesland, they being the best supported though in the reverse order. Only half beaus separated the first five horses. Notium took charge when the field settled down to lead past the stands, closely attended by Mountain Fox, Piastre and Cheval de Volee. with Dark Eagle handy. At this stage Hunting Cat lost his rider. Cheval de Volee moved up quickly passing the five to follow Notium across the top, where Friesland also became prominent. Notium held on

until a furlong from the post, when Friesland drew to the front with Piastre, Homily and Clinch making a desperate bid. The judge decided in favour of Piastre by the narrowest of margins from Friesland, with Homily right up, just shading Clinch and Cheval de Volee. Then came Dark Eagle and Mountain Fox.
