STRICKLAND AND RICHARDS
DISCREPANCY IN WEIGHTS MOOTED FIGHT MAY BE OFF (By Telegraph—t’reea Association—Conyitehtl SYDNEY, Feb. 6. Commenting on an Auckland report that the New Zealand boxer, Maurice Strickland, may come to Australia for a match with Ron. Richards, the latter’s manager, Mr. J. Munro, said, that although Richards’had announced his retirement from the ring his friends were hopeful that he would be induced to carry on with a series of matches awaiting him, including another meeting with Frd Henneberry. It is also reported that Mr. F. Lucas is still interested in a match in Australia between Strickland and Richards but the latter declares he will not fight Strickland—apparently because of the discrepancy in weights, Strickland being a heavyweight and Richards a middleweight. In Wellington Strickland said he and his manager, Mr. F. Crowley, had made all arrangements to leave for Sydney in time for a bout on February 24. The final word from Mr. Lucas and also transportation were still awaited. Strickland had not heard previously of Richards’ refusal to fight him or of his retirement. Strickland proposed cabling Mr. Lucas to-day to ascertain the position. Strickland is training for the bout.
