ROUND THE STABLES

NOTES AND COMMENTS Areas, who was recently secured by Miss M. C. Wilson, a patron of C. C. McCarthy's stable at Riccarton, has commenced work at Riccarton, and the bay gelding is looking in first-class fettle to undergo a preparation. Native Song must rank as one of the champions of the East Coast,. This season this gelding has won no few than seven of his thirteen starts and all of the successes have been secured on the coast. Twelve months ago Homily ran third in the Egmont Cup and she dead-heated for first place with Taurangi in the Tonks Stakes on the second day. So far this season Homily has raced patchily but she is on the improve and may surprise to-day. Rollicker has paid some great dividends at Hawera and he seems to like the course. He is to make his debut as a hurdler there to-day. As he is by Hunting Song there is every prospect of him making good. * i * Screen Star has benefited immensely from recent racing and must be given a chance to improve on last year’s third in open sprint at Hawera to-day. Surveyor-General will probably make his reappearance at Hawera on Saturday. He should not be long in getting out of hack company. The success of Gold Card at Pahiatua did not come out of its turn, but from the solid way in which he scored it appears as though there are more successes in store for him. He is engaged in the Waipapa Hack at Egmont to-day.

Olympus would require only to reproduce the form which carried him into second place at Trentham to secure at least place-money at the Egmont meeting. Olympus is now owned and trained by H. Dulieu. Riotous has come along well since racing on the flat at Ashhurst. He will possibly not be forward enough to reveal his true form at Egmont today, but his running will be closely watched in view of important events ahead.

Scandal ran a long way below his correct form on the first day at Trentham, but he shaped better later at the meeting. Seasoned by his recent racing he may make amend to-day at Hawera.

Segra has now become solid and his recent form, coupled with the run of success being enjoyed by Fred McHugh, will assure a large following for him in the Waipapa Handicap at Egmont to-day. It would not surprise to see Sanction taking an important part in the decision of distance hack races at Egmont this week. She failed badly in the greasy going on the first day at Pahiatua, but the firmer track and the longer distance on the second day enabled her to make the hack field look cheap. Red Cat put up some solid performances at Trentham recently which will assure him a big following in the seven-furlong events at Hawera this week, as he led for more than that distance in each start at Trentham. Rehandicaps for the Gore meeting have been declared as follows: Longford Handicap, Colonel Rouge 8.9; Summer Handicap, Aravane 9.0. Evemary is now not eligible for the Novice Handicap. * * * * Gladvnev, who was purchased at the recent National Sales by the Bulls trainer A. E. Neale, is to carry the colours of the Wellington sportswoman Mrs. S. Levin, who previously raced Pahu, Lustral, and others. No definite plans have been laid out for Gladynev at the moment, but he is in light work. A bright prospect at the Egrnont meeting which opens to-day is the Hall Mark filly Star Mark, who should be suited admirably by the distance of the Juvenile Handicap. She is one of the smartest fillies in training, but at the moment she is inclined to be a trifle highly-strung. However, she has settled down a good deal with racing, and her turn should not be far off.
