COOLER TEMPERATURES
BENEFIT TO WANGANUI
More welcome rain fell in Wanganui early yesterday morning, and also during the day, when several showers were experienced. There was a strong westerly wind all day, and temperatures were noticeably cooler The rain at the week-end was general in the North Island, and in Wanganui a fifth of an inch was recorded. Withered pastures were freshened and farmers benefited from Uie rain Before the week-end dairy production was declining in parts of the district, and lambs were oeing rushed to the freezing works before they lost too much condition. Fruit growers were seriously affected, and in some cases the lain saved crops badly in need of nourishment, market gardeners also benefited, bul farmers and market gardeners say that more rain is still needed in the district to offset the effects or the prolonged spell of dry weather. After several weeks in which the temperature frequently soared above 75deg., and even 80dcg., the atmosphere became cooler at the weekend and brought welcome relief from the hot, oppressive days. On Sunday the maximum temperature recorded in Wanganui was 67.2 degrees, and the minimum was 50.8 deg; ees. Up to 9 a.m. on Sunday, the recorded rainfall in Wanganui was ,19in., and for 24 hours, ended 9 a.m. yesterday, the recording was .Olin. The rain was general in the North Island, and the northern end of the South Island, most districts experiencing up to half an inch, and more.
