TAIHAPE PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE

MOTOR-CAR TO BE RAFFLED. The Mayor of Taihape, Mr. L. B. H. de Lautour, presided over a meeting of the Taihape Patriotic Committee on Thursday evening. It was reported that Mrs. Patrick's offer of 40 chairs for the soldiers’ club room had been gratefully accepted. The following sports gear was sant to the Waiouru camp recently by the Wellington Provincial Patriotic Council: seven wireless sets, 20 dart boards, 20 cribbage boards, 50 packs of playing cards, 4 Rugby balls with bladders, 2 soccer balls with bladders. The question of providing a boxing ring is under consideration. Car For Raffle. The mayor reported that a person who wishes to remain anonymous, had offered to donate £l5O towards the purchase of a car to be raffled for patriotic purposes, the offer to be conditional on the balance being raised locally. The secretary reported that only small cars were available and another £l5O would have to be found. The committee decided to accept the offer and raise the balance of the money required and were of the opinion that the car, when purchased, should be given to the Wellington Provincial Patriotic Council so that it could be raffled throughout the Wellington province!

Parcels For Troops. Taihape is required to supply 120 parcels for dispatch to troops overseas, early in February. It was decided to request Lady Galway Junior Guild to organise Saturday night dances for soldiers (and girls) only. It was hoped that this effort would be supported by the ladies of the town and that they would turn up in large numbers and partner the soldiers. In view of the work of the Patriotic Committee in raising funds, collecting parcels and knitting gear etc., for soldiers overseas, it was decided to request the R.S.A. to control the club rooms and general entertainment of soldiers in Taihape.
