TWO SHAKES FELT IN WELLINGTON
RECORDS AT OBSERVATORY
EPICENTRE SOUTH OF WHITE ISLAND
[ Per Press Association. ] WELLINGTON, Jan. 1(1. Although not felt in Wellington, two earthquakes were recorded at the Dominion Observatory. Both were of moderate intensity, the first being slightly more intense. The times were 2.40 p.m. yesterday and 4.17 a.m. today. Recoils indicate that the epicentre was about 160 miles from Wellington. In that case the epicentre was somewhere to the south of the Bay of Plenty and not out at sea at White Island. The comparatively circumscribed area over which the ’quakes were felt suggests a shallow origin, but until further reports are received and the records are more closely analysed it is impossible to be exact about the origins Following news of the sharp earthquake shocks in the Bay of Plenty yesterday afternoon reports from Whakatane to-day indicate that a series of tremors were felt in mZny parts of the district during the night, but there was no fu ther damage.
