SUCCESS CLAIMED FOR THAI FORCES
FIGHTING AGAINST FRENCH
OFFENSIVE ON INDO-CHINA BORDER, Received Jan. 10, 5.5 p.m. BANGKOK, Jan. 9. Thailand forces, driving deep into Cambodia, forced the French to retreat "far behind their old positions,” which Thai forces occupied. However, they have not yet reached Sisophon. A communique said that 90 Thai planes heavily bombed Slsophon and five other towns, entirely setting fire to Slsophon. All the Thai planes returned. The communique added that artillery fire is raging throughout the Nongkai, Nakornphanom, Mukdaharn sectors, setting fire to an oil dump and exploding a munitions dump. Received Jan. 10, 9.45 p.m. HONGKONG, Jan. 10. The Domei news agency’s Hanoi correspondent reports that the French authorities admit that superior Thai troops captured the border town of Poipet on January 7, the French retiring 30 miles towards Slsophon. Received Jan. 10,11.40 p.m. BANGGKOK, Jan. 10. The Thai Army is advancing steadily into Cambodia. According to a Thai communique the French have abandoned their defence line and withdrawn into the interior. That aircraft dropped bombs on Sisophon and another Boreer town, killing two and wounding 11. The French Air Force carried out severe reprisals on various parts of Thai territory.
