NEWS FROM MARTON

HOME GUARD AND EMERGENCY PRECAUTIONS SCHEME. FIRST PARADE NEXT WEDNESDAY. The first parade of the Marton Home Guard and Emergency Precautions Scheme Company will be held in the Marton Paijk on Wednesday, January 15, at 8 p.m. All members who have enrolled are specially requested to attend.

AT THE CIVIC THEATRE. MICKL’Y ROONEY AS “YOUNG TOM EDISON.” Motion picture audiences will see a new Mickey Rooney in "Young Tom Edison,” which comes this afternoon and evening and Monday evening to the Civic Theatre. Strangely serious, his swagger given way to humility, Mickey received the assignment to portraj' Thomas Alva Edison as a boy with a feeling approaching reverence. To Rooney it was the most important performance of his career. Hie struggle to capture and transfer to the screen something of the boundless faith and courage of the boy who was to become one of the greatest men the world has known, temporarily changed the youthful actor’s life. To the clowning and gags that helped enliven the sets of “Babes in Arms" and the Hardy pictures, was added a new thoughtfulness. He is ably supported by Fay Bainter, George Bancroft, Virginia Weidler and Eugene Pallette.

“Cavalcade of Acamedy Awards.” In addition, “Cavalcade of Academy Awards” will be screened, bringing you all the stars who have won this coveted award from 1929 to 1938.. See your favourite of to-day and' yesteryear and bring back a flood of pleasant memories. HOME GUARD PARADE RALLY OF ALL UNITS

At a ’meeting of the Marton Home Guard Committee, presided over by the deputy-Mayor, Mr. G. B. Gregory, the secretary, Mr. C. C. McDonald, reported that arrangements had been made for a visit to Marton by the Dominion Home Guard Commander-in-Chief, General R. Young, C. 8., C.M.G., D. 5.0., on Thursday, January 30. The committee decided to hold a rally to mark the occasion, to be held on the Park at 8 p.m. after a parade through the town. All services would be asked to turn out, including the Marton Band, Red Cross, St. John Ambulance, and Auxiliary, Women’s War Service Auxiliary, Home Guard, and other organisations. The parade will assemble at the old Drill Hall site in North Broadway, and march down the main street to Morris Street, thence up to Stewart Street, north again to High Street, back to Broadway, to Follett Street, to the Park. The committee decided to hold the first Home Guard parade of all ranks (including the E.P.S. Company) in the Park on Wednesday, January 15, at 8 p.m. In the event of rain, arrangements will be made for a suitable hall.

The secretary reported that enrolments to date totalled 168 and were proceeding, while keen interest was being taken in outlying districts, notably Makohau and Greatford, where sections were expected to be enrolled shortly. There was every reason to believe that Marton would soon reach battalion strength (360). Recommendations were considered from the Emergency Precautions Scheme Company for the appointment of officers, the following being endorsed: 0.C., Mr. G. B. Gregory; platoon officers, Messrs. A. J. B. Sicely, A. A. Mclndoe, W. B. Sawyer, and T. E. Barton. Lieut. R. W. Turner and SergeantMajor C. W. Whittington were recommended for appointment as platoon officers to the Home Guard. RANGITIKEI CRICKET TO-DAY’S MATCHES The main cricket attraction in Ran gitikei to-day will be the clash between Air Force and Porewa at Marton. While Air Force are ahead on points from Porewa, the latter club is taking the field confident of victory. Owing to abandonment of matches due to rain, these teams have met only once before —the first game of the season, when Air Force obtained an innings victory. Porewa, to-day, takes the field a stronger eleven and if Air Force can also come to Marton with a good side, the match should be very interesting. | On the eastern wicket, Old Boys should have little difficulty in defeating Marton. The latter club has lost two prominent cricketers during the week, the captain, L. Smith, who is in camp, and M. Henderson, who has accepted a position in Wellington. Teams to hand are: — Marton: G. Birch, R. Lewis, N. Amon, I. Barton, E. Bailey, R. Price, B. Gracie, L. Hamer, F. Leonard, E. Henderson, G. Frederick, and B. Dornbush. Old Boys: M. Wysocki, Duncan, C. S. Beechey, I. Jolly, H. Low, B. Klitscher, D. Comrie, W. Lyon, C. Hobbs. D. Hart, P. Langston, P. Johnston, D. Kingham.
