OBITUARY

MR. H. W. DEMPSEY. Mr. H. W. Dempsey, one of the oldest school inspectors of New Zealand, died recently in New Plymouth at the age of 88 years. Born in Ireland in 1852, he came to New Zealand in 1887 after holding teaching appointments at Home. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity, and an ardent bowler.

MR. A. BOON. The death has occurred of Mr. Alfred Boon, aged 72, superintendent of the New Plymouth Fire Brigade. Born at Dome Valley, Warkworth, he arrived at New Plymouth in the latter part of last century to take a notable place in the business life of the town. In 1895 he started in the building trade and the firm continues to-day of which he was the managing director. Mr. Boon joined the fire brigade in 1897, and became superintendent in 1923. He leaves a widow, two sons, and a daughter.

MR. R. THORP. One of Napier’s best-known business men, Mr. Richard Thorp, died in Napier’on Thursday morning. He was born in Bury, near Manchester, Lancashire, and educated at Bury Grammar School. He came to New Zealand in 1885, going to Foxton, where he was farming for three years. In 1888 he went to Napier and founded a bootimporting business, Thorp and Co. He retired in 1916. He married in 1888 Miss Alice Howard, only daughter of Mr. Richard Howard, Bury, Lancashire, who predeceased him only three weeks ajyo. He was a trustee of the Loyal Napier Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U. He leaves a family of one daughter Miss E. H. Thorp (Napier), and two sons Mr. J. R. H. Thorpe (Hastings), and Dr. T. H. Thorp (New Plymouth).

MRS. J. H. POLLOCK. The death occurred at her residence, Ludlam Street, Seatoun, Wellington, on Monday of an old and respected resident, Mrs. J. H. Pollock. She was born in Ross, Westland, and spent her early life on the West Coast, going to Wellington shortly after her marriage 50 years ago. She was a member of St. James’s Presbyterian Church during the whole of her. residence She was a member of the Women's National Reserve and the League of Mothers. Mrs. Pollock was keenly interested in croquet, being a member of several clubs and vice-patron of the Wellington Croquet Association. Her husband predeceased her five years ago. _
