BRITISH SUBMARINE’S LONG CHASE
SHELLED A U-BOAT [ British Official Wireles*. J RUGBY, Jan. 8. An Admiralty communique stalest "One of our submarines, H.M.S. Tuna, reported a spirited engagement by night on the surface with a U-boat in enemy waters. Immediately on encountering the Tuna the U-boat made off at high speed, firing its aft gun. The Tuna gave chase and opened fire with a four-inch gun. The U-boat was hit by one shell the conning tower but unfc»unatmy this cannot be considered vital damage. The Tuna chased the enemy for nearly an hour and bro>ce off the engagement when forced to dive by the appearance of enemy escort vessels which came to the rescue of the damaged U-boat. The Tuna had previously sunk an enemy armed tug by gunfire. In neither of these encounters did the Tuna suffer any damage or casualties. British Ships Torpedoed. New York reports that 23 survivors of the torpedoed British vessel Shakespear (5029 tons) landed at Sal (Cape Verde Island). It is reported that several of the crew were killed and 19 persons are missing.
