RAETIHI PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE
MONTHLY MEETING (Own Correspondent). RAETIHI, Oct. 14. The usual monthly meeting of the Raetihi Patriotic Committee was presided over by Mr. W. H. Sandford. The secretary (Mr. Aird) reported upon the proceedings at the recent conference of Patriotic Committee delegates, held at Palmerston North. The meeting was addressed by Hon. Vincent Ward and Major J. Abel, who outlined the province's share in the forthcoming £1,000,000 appeal for funds. The appeal is to begin on October 14 and ceases temporarily on November 30 till after the Christmas holiday period. The Wellington Province’s allocation is £200,000, and of this the Raetihi centre, on a population basis, is to raise approximately £lOOO. , The committee discussed ways anti i means of raising the sum and the foillowing decisions were arrived at: 1 That a flag carnival be I The district be divided into three sections comprising town, country and I sports bodies. I The secretary was instructed lo get into touch with all organisations in J the community and seek their co- | operation in the project. It is to be I suggested that each section form a I committee from representatives oi I their institutions.
Some suggestions to be explored were: A community sing led by a well-known song leader. Messrs. A. E. Scarrow and A. E. Urwin were deputed to negotiate in this direction. Dr. W. J. Feltham is to be asked to produce a play, assisted by local taient. Sports bodies are asked to arrange special competitions in the forthcoming Labour Day week-end. Messrs. Sandford and Ritchie are to organise, with the assistance of the Raetihi Volunteer Fire Brigade, a monster demonstration on November 5. On the same evening the Raetihi Harmonica Band is to be asked to assist. An endeavour will also be made to have a display by the local Maori community on this evening. Following the New Year two local women’s organisations have decided to put on regular afternoon teas and meals at the various sales throughout the season. Proceeds will go to the patriotic funds. Messrs. D. J. Berry and D. F. Scarrow are to organise a sheep drive after Christmas. The local schools are to be asked to assist and the Raetihi Swimming Club will probably promote an evening carnival. The secretary reported that there was to be a major art union run from Wellington. Each district, in this effort, will be credited with the amount represented by the sales of tickets within its area.
