TRANSFER OF GOLD TO BALTIC STATES
SOVIET’S OBJECTION TO PROHIBITION VIEWPOINT BEING CAREFULLY CONSIDERED [ British Official Wireless. ] RUGBY, Aug. 14. Mr. R. A. Butler, Foreign Secretary, said the Government was considering representations from the Soviet Government which raised an objection to the prohibition imposed by an Order-in-Council on the transfer of gold balances lying in the Bank of England to the account of three Baltic States. The Soviet viewpoint was being carefully considered in the light of important legal, financial, and political considerations. When asked whether the fate of the gold balances would be considered as part of a general commercial agreement with the Soviet. Mr. Butler said: “These Baltic questions provide a problem of their own. The British Government has its point of view and interests and I see no reason why a settlement should not be reached.”
