MERCHANT CRUISER LOST

TORPEDOED IN HEAVY SEA I MOST OF COMPLEMENT SAVED (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) Received Aug. 15, 6.5 p.m. LONDON, Aug. 14. The Admiralty communique announces the loss of the armed merchant cruiser Transylvania, 17,000 tons, in the Atlantic. She was torpedoed at night in a heavy sea, but 300 officers and men, most of her complement, were saved. The rescuing ships, including trawlers, raced to the scene and saved 300 of the officers and crew, who were landed at west coast ports. The death roll is thought to be between 30 and 40. Immediately it was realised that tne ship was doomed, the captain ordered the lifeboats to be lowered. One overturned and probably accounted for most of the casualties. The captain was among those saved.
