KARIOI NEWS

FAREWELLS TO SOLDIERS Karioi has been en fete over the last week-end, when several house parties have been held 'to bid farewell to boys leaving the district to join up with the fighting forces. On Thursday last an evening was held at Mr. and Mrs. Kaire’s residence to bid farewell to Mrs. Kaire’s brother, Ben Hakaraia, who was on final leave. About 30 people attended and a most enjoyable evening, with dancing, singing and competitions, was spent by all. Items were rendered by Ben Hakaraia, T. Spry, jnr., and Mrs. Tipatio. A dainty supper was provided by Mrs. Kaire, assisted by Mrs. Le Noel, after which Mr. Kaire, in a fitting speech, congratulated Ben Hakaraia and another soldier present, Mr. R. Mahe and, on behalf of those present, asked the boys to accept a cheqtp as a token of remembrance from their Karioi friends. The recipients feelingly replied and, after the singing of “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows,” further dancing was indulged in to an early hour, when the singing of the National Anthem brought a happy function to a close.

A similar function was held at Mr. and Mrs. T. Spry’s residence to bid farewell to Mrs. T. Spry’s brother, R. Maye, who was also on final leave. On Saturday night last another send-off was tendered to Mr. R. Pickrang, who is also leaving the district to join up with the forces. This function was held at Mr. and Mrs. Robertson's residence. Mr. Pickrang was presented with a razor set. Mr. T. Spry expressed regret at losing such a valuable member of the Karioi football team, but congratulated Mr. Pickrang on going to serve his country.

Mr. R. Wilson also spoke on the sterling qualities of Mr. R. Pickrang and how he would be missed among his comrades in Karioi.

Mr. Pickrang suitably replied and expressed his thanks for the evening in his honour.
