ACTIVITIES FOR THE MONTH At the monthly meeting of the Plunket Society held on Tuesday last, Mrs. J. C. Wickham acted as chairwoman in the place of Mrs. T. Hine, president, who was unavoidably absent. . The following members were present, Mesdames Adams, Cole, Currie, Davies, Deacon, Jenkins, McPhail, Mac Lean, Millward, Nelson, G. H. Robertson, R. G. Taiboys, and Woollams. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Hine (president./, Burr, Graham, Keesing, Nixon, Wilberfoss and Miss Baker. Mrs. Wickham extended the sym pathy of the members with Mrs. Hine in the 'death of her sister. This was carried in the usual manner.
The minutes of the previous monthly meeting having been circulated to members, they were taken as read, and confirmed.
The Plunket nurses reported that durng the month there had been 68 new cases, whilst 753 old case’s were still on the books. Visitors to the offices numbered 2092, represented by 1012 adults, 917 babies, 142 children and 21 others. Visits paid to homes totalled 374. In the pre-natal section there were 8 new cases, 59 return visits and 42 old eases still on the books.
The matron of Stewart Karitane Hospital stated that, during the month 25 babies and 12 mothers had been admitted and 27 babies and 12 mothers discharged. Cases had been received from Wanganui, Kaponga, Eltham, Hawera, Pongaroa, Palmerston North, Manaia, Parihauhau, Halcombe, Maxwell, Dannevirke, New Plymouth, Tokaanu, Waipawa, Picton, Masterton and Stratford. The matron acknowledged vegetables from Mr. Pettigrew and a turkey from Mrs. Frank Pearce.
Donations were received from the following, to whom the society extends its appreciation and thanks: — Anonymous, £2 12s 6d, to Plunket funds; Stratford Plunket Society, £5, for Stewart Karitane Hospital funds; Toko sub-branch, £4, for hospital building fund, and 5s from the Wanganui Mothers’ Helpers’ Society for use of collection tins on the occasion of their recent street appeal.
Correspondence was read from Raetihi Plunket Society, apologising for inability to attend annual meeting; from Hon. W. J. Rogers, M.L.C., thanking the society for congratulatory letter on his appointment to the Legislative Council, and from the New Zealand Crippled Children’s Society thanking the society for use of rooms for annual meeting.
The resignation of Mrs. F. P. Talboys as a vice-president was received with much regret. Mrs. Taiboys having been a most valuable and enthusiastic member, a minute of appreciation was recorded of the fine work done by her during the many years she had been associated with the society.
Mrs. Adams moved and Mrs. McPhail ’seconded that the Y.M.C.A. be granted the use of the society’s collection tins for their street day.
Mrs. Wickham moved a hearty vote of thanks to those ladies who had served on the various committees during the past year. This was seconded by Mrs. Millward and carried by acclamation.
Mesdames Jenkins, Mac Lean, Nelson, R. G. Taiboys, Wilberfoss, and Woollams were appointed to the executive committee; Mesdames Adams, Cole, Deacon, Jenkins, and McPhail to the house committee, with Mrs. Hine as convener, and Mesdames Currie, Millward and Stanford to the selection committee.
The box of chocolates competition held in connection with the recent Plunket appeal was won by Miss Jane Wilberfoss.
