TAIHAPE NOTES

THIRD ECHELON FAREWELLED Taihape and district members of the Third Echelon and the Railway Unit were fare welled at a concert and community sing held in the Town Tall, on Saturday evening, and each soldier was presented with a money belt and 10s note by the Mayor, Mr. L. B. H. de Lautour. The send-off was arranged by the Lady Galway Patriotic Guild and the hall was packed almost to capacity. Visiting artists were present from Palmerston North and provided the concert programme. During an interval the Mayor addressed the audience and said that it was pleasing to see so many people present to farewell the boys in uniform. Mr. de Lautour thanked the visiting artists for their splendid concert. The Mayor made a presentation of a money belt and a ten shilling note to each soldier. The boys were loudly cheered as they received their gifts and the audience sang “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows.” A presentation of a travelling case was made to Sister Mary Belk by the Mayor, who said that Miss Belk was a daughter of Taihape, and the town was proud of her. She was one of the first nurses from this district to go overseas to give her services in caring for sick and wounded soldiers, and Taihape wished her well. TAIHAPE GOLF CLUB The first round of the championships of the Taihape Golf Club were played on the Raukura links during the week-end under ideal conditions. The most meritorious win of the day was gained by F. Reece, who played excellent golf to defeat B. Collerton 2 and 1 in the middleweight championship. After losing the first two holes Reece turned on six bogeys and a birdie to finish the round in 40. He clinched the match at the 17th. with a birdie 3 after sinking a 15ft. putt. E. P. Duncan put up a great fight against J. Moodie, the match ending in favour of the latter, 1 up. G. W. Ryan was round in 39 in his match against J. Knight, and won 1 up. James proved too good for S. Hintz.

In the senior championship Mortland, McKinnon and O’Callaghan scored comfortable wins. In the junior championship L. Siddle and A. Mortland both won 3 and 2. Detailed results are as follows: — Senior Championship.—J. P. Mortland defeated T. C. Kincaid, 6 and 5: R. A. McKinnon defeated A. C. Joblin, 4 and 3; R. O’Callaghan defeated B. Somerville, 5 and 4; A. P. Sec-combe and W. T. Jones have yet. to piay. Middleweight Championship. F. Reece defeated B. Collerton. 2 and 1 J. Moodie defeated E. P. Duncan, 1 up; A. James defeated S. Middleweight Championship. K Creighton defeated R. Kiely, 11 and 9. Junior Championship. J. Infield defeated P. Becker, 2 and 1. , PATRIOTIC MEETING Mr. E. M. Bardsley, secretary of the Wellington Patriotic Council, will address a meeting of all people interested in patriotic work to be held in the Council Chambers, Town Hall, Taihape, to-morrow afternoon (Wednesday), August 14, at 2 p.m. All interested are invited to attend. The following is the draw for an extra medal round to be played in conjunction with the second qualifying round next Thursday: Mrs. Olliver and Miss Bowler, Mrs. Boles and Mrs. Kincaid, Mrs. Quinn and Mrs. Murrell, Miss Bradley and scorer, Mrs. O’Callaghan and scorer (Sat.), Mrs. Bond and Miss Keegan. Mrs. Kay and Mrs. James, Mrs. Wylie and Miss Bond, Miss C. Bradley and Miss Fitzherbert, Mrs. Graham and Miss Boon, Mrs. Tait and Miss Speedie (Sat.), Miss Phillips and Miss Palmer (Sat.), Miss Pierard and Miss Abbot (Sat.), Miss Nicholls and scorer (Sat.).
