REPRESENTATIVE HOCKEY

RANGITIKEI BEAT MANAWATU IN BOTH GAMES (Own Correspondent.) MARTON, Aug. 10. Two fast ladies’ hockey matches were played at Palmerston North this afternoon, between Rangitikei and Manawatu teams. In both the A and B grade matches, the visitors were successful, auguring well for their visit to the New Zealand championships at Auckland this month. The results were: Rangitikei A 3, v. Manawatu A 0; Rangitikei B 2, v. Manawatu B 0. The games were played on a dry ground, making for fast play and entertaining the spectators well. Manawatu made several lightning excursions into Rangitikei territory, but these attacks were always repulsed with success. The fine defensive playshown by the Rangitikei A full-backs was demonstrated by the fact that not once in the game did the visiting goal-keeper touch the ball. Both the half-time scores were I—o. Misses B. Tolley and L. Barnes shot goals lor the B team, and Misses B. Iwikau, M. Aitken and Mrs. I. Hammond for the A side. After the match the Rangitikei team was hospitably entertained by the Manawatu hosts at afternoon tea. Mr. Wilson, manager of the home side, extended congratulations to Rangitikei on their second double victory and expressed a hope that the team would perform with distinction at Auckland. Mr. W. J. Mogridge, manager for Rangitikei, returned thanks. It was mentioned during the speeches that Manawatu were endeavouring to get a team away to the championships. Men’s Competition. After a spell of a week due to a representative game, the men’s competion was resumed to-day and the following were the results:—Wanderers 5, v. Marton 2; Kia Ora 1, v. Huia 1. The score in the Wanderers-Marton game was not a true picture of the game, the play being very much evener than the score suggests, although Wanderers deserved their victory. Marton, playing on their own ground, were two short, but the combination was good, and the game was always interesting. For the winners N. Reid (3) and Waldron (2) shot goals, while 11. Parkinson netted Marton's two.
