DAYLIGHT ATTACKS

RAIDS BY R.A.F. NORTHERN FRANCE AND HOLLAND [ British Official Wireless.] Received Aug. 1, 5.5 p.m. RUGBY, July 31. A communique issued by the Air Ministry states that.R.A.F. bombers carried out daylight attacks throughout yesterday on military objectives in northern France and Holland. Damage was done to sidings at Ostend, to dispersed aircraft on the Querqueville aerodrome near Cherbourg, and to hangars and other aircraft at Stingelbert and Boulogne. In the course of reconnaissance and escort duties, Coastal Command aircraft attacked gun emplacements on the Norwegian coast and a, supply ship off Haugesund, north of Stavanger. The Emden naval base was also attacked. One British plane is missing. Night operations were curtailed owing to bad weather, but attacks were made on oil refineries at Homburg, in the Ruhr, and at Monheim, near Dusseldorf, on a goods yard in Soest, and on aerodromes at Duisberg, Antwerp, and Courtrai. No aircraft were lost in these night operations.

Waves of bombers attempted to penetrate inland across the Welsh coast. The formations were broken up. Bombs fell at sea and near a lifeboat station. There were no casualties. A Berlin communique states: “Our air arm on the night of July 30 bomb?s ed the harbours at Swansea and Plye mouth and an aeroplane factory at k Filton (Gloucestershire). Only a few e British planes raided western Germany and there was no material dam- 1 i- age and no casualties. An Air Ministry communique, naming the loss of German aircraft during July as at least 240, states that many more enemy aircraft have been put out of action in the air or on the ground, but the figure given took into account only those which were confirmed as having been destroyed. The losses given account for 600 officers and men killed or taken prisoner.
