Meteorological Office, Wellington, Thursday, August 1, 3 p.m. General Situation. —A weak depression is crossing the North Island, while an intense anti-cyclone covers the Tasman and South Island. Pressure is high also to the east. Forecast. —Winds: From a southerly quarter predominating, force mainly light or moderate but fresh to strong at first in parts of the southern half of the North Island. Decreasing, however, and later becoming variable in many places. Seas (New Zealand waters): Rather rough to rough in the Cook Strait and Taranaki Bight reg.on, slight to moderate elsewhere, but rising somewhat between Castle Point and East Cape. Eastern Tasman Sea: Light and variable winds and slight to moderate seas. Weather: Mainly fair and cool but mist or drizzle in eastern districts between Banks Peninsula and East Cape and in a few isolated places elsewhere. Conditions improving gradually, however, from the south. The New Zealand Friends’ School. St. John’s Hill, reports as follows for 24 hours ending 6 p.m. yesterday: Hours of sunshine, 3 hours. Rainfall, trace. Maximum temperature, 53dcg. Fahr.; minimum temperature, 40deg. Fahr.
