WANGANUI RETURNS FOR JULY INCREASE IN BIRTHS i According to vital statistics for _'Wanganui, last month's births totalled 55, compared with 49 for July, 1939. _ : Marriages showed an increase of five ’ (29), compared with the same month '' i last year, when 24 were recorded. ; i There were 32 deaths last month, the j isame number as in July of last year. _ | Births totalled 404, compared with ' > 327 for the seven months of 1939. [There were 203 marriages, compared ‘! with 182, and 182 deaths, compared j with J 84. ’ Details are:—

MR. J. H. JOHNSTON, FEILDING ' The friends of Mr. James Hawberry Johnston, Beattie Street, Feilding, learned with deep regret of his sudden demise on Tuesday of last week at tne Palmerston North Public Hospital. Born at Palmerston Soutn, New Zealand, he was the youngest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Johnston. The deceased gentleman was a painter by trade, having lived at Taihape and New Plymouth and tor the past nine years in Feilding, wnere his quiet, friendly character won him many . friends. For some years Air. Jonnston i was proprietor of the Central Billiard' . Saloon and was for a time a member ; of the Feilding Municipal Band. His , marriage took place at Taihape to - Miss Elizabeth Reardon. The funeral was held on Thursday, the cortege leaving St. John’s Anglican Church for the Feilding Cemetery, where the last sad rites were performed, Archdeacon F. Petrie, M.A., conducting the services in the presence of a large gathering of relatives and friends. The pall-oearers were Messrs. T. Reardon (Ohingaiti), J. M Reardon (Taumarunui), S. S. Newson (Taihape) and J. Lewis, J. O’Dwyer and M. Stuchberry, of Feilding. The chief mourners at the graveside were I Mrs. Johnston, Mrs. Humphrey, Miss iEileen Reardon, Mr. James Humphrey, j junr., and Mr. T. Johnston. j Many beautiful floral tributes were L received, along with many messages of ‘sympathy from different parts of New J Zealand.
