FAMOUS CINNA

DAUGHTER COMING TO NEW ZEALAND FILLY FOR MAXWELL STUD MR. J. ALEANDER’S PERCHASE Four of the progeny of that famous brood mare Cinna have been imported to New Zealand, these being Gay Shield, Beau Pere, Mr. Standfast and Dink. Gay Shield is defunct, but he left his mark on the thoroughbred industry in the Dominion before his demise. Beau Pere, now in Australia, was responsible for a brilliant page in the history of New Zealand racing, and his progeny have enabled him to top the list of winning sires for two reasons. Mr. Standfast and Dink are more recent importations but they promise to carry on the successes of their elder relations. Now comes the news that a daughter of Cinna has been purchased by Messrs. Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., for Mr. L. J. G. Alexander, of the Cranleigh Stud, Maxwell, and they have also secured a grand-daughter of Cinna for the same purchaser. Both these fillies are rising two-year-olds, and it is likely that they will race in New Zealand before going to join Mr. Alexander’s select stud of English, Australian and New Zealand mares at “Cranleigh.” The-daughter of Cinna is a full-sister to Dink, being by Nothing Venture, a son of that noted racehorse and sire Prince Galahad. Two of his daughters were imported to this fiart of the world, and one of them is the dam of that great Australian racehorse Ajax. Nothing Venture won goocj races at Ascot and Newmarket and a total in stakes of £B3Bl. This filly is a chesyiut, but the other, a bay is by Obliterate, a great staying son of Tracery and sire of that wonderful staying mare Quashed, winner of the Ascot Gold Cup (22 miles) and the Jockey Club Cup (21 miles). Her dam is Cinneraria, one of the younger daughters of Cinna, the sire being that brilliant racehorse Diomedes, the fastest horse of his day.

Cinna, it is interesting to note, had a successful career on the turf prior lo going to the stud. She won th” Newmarket Norfolk Two-year-old Plate, the One Thousand Guineas (worth £5800), the Coronation Stakes at Ascot (£2826) and was beaten a neck in the Oaks at Epsom. She is a half-sister to Spearhead, sire of the Melbourne Cup winner Spearfelt and the Sydney Cup winner The Dimmer. Her sire, Polymelus, was by the Derby winner Cyllene from the Hampton mare Maid Marian. Cinna’s dam, Baroness La Fleche, was the smartest two-year-old of her year and was by the Derby winner Ladas from La Fleche, a brilliant St. Simon mare who won the 1000 Guineas and the Oaks in addition to many other valuable races, her total stake-earn ings being £34,702. Cinna carries two strains of the famous mare Quiver, acknowledged by the greatest authorities as one of the most influential forces behind the world’s best racehorses. Both these fillies are described as very attractive individuals and they should make brood mares of the highest class.
