IMPORT CONTROL AND RELIEF WORKERS
Sir, —Your recent leader under the caption of “Import Control” would have been far more widely read by those concerned had it been headed "Loafing on Relief Works," as would also another effort of yours which appeared some time ago headed “Flood Control."
You seem to take great delight in belittling Wanganui relief workers, and leave no stone unturned in your attempt to mislead the public in thinking that wholesale loafing is going on on these jobs. Incidentally, you lay the blame at the door of the Government for what goes on on these jobs. 4 -
Has it ever occurred to you that all the Government, has to do with these jobs is to find the money (100 per cent.)? The Wanganui City Council is entirely responsible for the .way in which the money is spent, and they also provide the supervision of the job. If you think the money is not being handled to the greatest advantage, your attack would be far better were it directed at the City Council.
In conclusion, sir, I would ask you in all fairness, to pay a visit to these jobs and actually see the amount ot work that has to be done, the amount of sand to be shifted, the amount ot turfing to be done, particularly in the case of Cook's Gardens, and the type of men employed. Perhaps you would find one or two isolated cases of downright loafing, but taking the men as a whole, they are a good type and would welcome a chance to show what has been done.—l am, etc., “RELIEF WORKER."
