The “Matapuna” Romney flock was founded in 1922 by the purchase of specially-selected ewes from J. H. McLean,, flock 345, one of the early Romney flocks founded on almost pure “Parorangi” (E. Short) blood. Since its foundation the Matapuna flock has been carefully line bred, incorporating by the careful use of outside sires the most popular strains of Romney blood, such as those founded by the famous rams Premier and Brazil, and other families, which have proved successful in the Penrose Leedslown, Parorangi and Waiorongomai flocks. The flock has been heavily culled annually, and for the last twelve years all ewes retained for breeding purposes have been inspected and tattooed by the Society. All sheep offered for sale have been inspected and tattooed by W. C. Small, Esq. The ewes have been mated with selected sires.
