LEAGUE OF MOTHERS

INTERESTING MEETING Mrs. McPhail presided at the April meeting of the League of Mothers, held yesterday afternoon, in the Victoria Hall, which had been brightly, decorated with bowls of dahlias and small vases of marigolds on the small tables. In extending a welcome to all, the president gave a special welcome to Mrs. N. Driver, a former president of the branch, who had been unable to attend meetings for some considerable time on account of ill health. A visitor from Rotorua, Mrs. Brooker, and a new member, Mrs. Potbury, were also welcomed. Reference was made to the death of the late Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, also to those who had suffered bereavement during the month, all standing in silence as a mark of respect. Sympathy was expressed with Mrs. Mere wether, who had lost her son on active service with the R.A.F. It was reported that a member had recently visited Auckland and attended one of the branch meetings there, where she met Mrs. Dowsett, who was the first president of the Wanganui branch. Mrs. Dowsett sent greetings to the local branch and wished the members every success during the year. Mrs. McPhail told the branch something of the good work being done in Auckland by Mrs. Dowsett. The secretary, Mrs. Uttley, read the minutes. In thanking Mesdames Cundy and Gould for undertaking the work of the “bring and buy” stall and the receiving of articles for the soldiers* pare/.-, the president said the branch had arranged the day for this purpose, and while some members had contributed to the stall to raise money to buy material, others had brought articles to be packed in the parcels for sons and relatives of members serving in the forces.

After the usual hymn a prayer for peace was read. The door hostesses, Mesdames A. J. Pritchard and Vollemaere, greeted members on arrival. Miss N. Sampson gave an interesting talk on child psychology and Mrs. F. Reid entertained with elocutionary items. Afternoon tea was served.
