Monks in Army. Monks of the famous Benedictine Abbey of Ct. Mary, Buckfast, Devon, are serving as chaplains in the British Army. In August, two or three weeks before the war broke out, five of them volunteered for service. Four joined units a week after war was declared, and three are already in France. They have the rank of captain. The military authorities have given instructions that the monks must wear uniforms. When they return to Buckfast the chaplains will resume monastic life. They are ordinary members of the Abbey community. The fifth monk who volunteered is Father Raphael Stones, who served as Prior to the Abbey under the last Abbot. De, Anscar Vomer. Father Stones was a private in the last war, and was wounded before he went to Bucklast.
