MAJESTIC THEATRE

“DESTRY RIDES AGAIN” Marlene Dietrich in the role of a frontier entertainer co-stars with j James Stewart in Universal’s ‘Destry Rides Again,” which is the current j attraction at the Majestic Theatre, I One of the season’s most unusual pictures, “Destry Rides Again” is a mark-1 ed departure from Miss Dietrich’s re-1 cent screen roles. The list of i players includes Mischa Auer, Charles I Winninger, Brian Donlevy, Irene Hervey, Una Merkel, Allen Jenkins, Warren Hymer, Samuel S. Hinds, Billy Gilbert, and many others. The picture is frankly a dramatic spectacle of the old west in which hard riding and quick shooting are interspersed with the stirring mob scenes that have filled so many pages in the history of the American frontier. A high light of "Destry Rides Again” is an epochal fist-fight between Miss Dietrich and Miss Merkel, with Stewart as the unwitting mediator who draws Marlene’s wrath on his own head. The fight was five days in the filming and is rated the feminine counterpart of that historic battle in "The Spoilers.” The supporting programme includes scenes of the A.I.F. in Palestine.

“The Women” “The Women,” a satirical comedy denouncing leaders of society who spend their time in beauty salons, night clubs, and drawing-rooms prying into each other’s private lives, is to commence on Friday at the Majestic Theatre. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer have based this provocative film in the famous play of the same name, which was written by Claire Boothe and which enjoyed instant success on the New York stage. Norma Shearer plays the part of Mary Haines, the most likeable character, earnestly and with fervour. Rosalind Russell, as Sylvia Fowler, the gossip, is one of the dominating figures of the film. Equally convincing is Joan Crawford as a calculating vamp. The high standard of character acting is maintained by the supporting players, who include Paulette Goddard, Mar- j jorie Main, Mary Boland, Joan Fontaine, Ruth Hussey, and Virginia Weidler.
