CASES DEALT WITH BY MAGISTRATE "These cases of thefts of petro cannot be lightly dealt with," saic Mr. J. H. Salmon. S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Wanganui yesterday when a man was charged with receiving four gallons and a further twe gallons of petrol, knowing that it hac been dishonestly obtained. Defendant, Alfred James Chapman, was fined £3 on one charge, £2 on the other. He was also ordered tc make good the value of the petrol. Nail Set to Damage Tyre Alfred Norman Larkman was charged with wilfully damaging two motor-car tyres, the property of B. C. Lazelle. Sergeant J. V. Cosgrave. who represented the police, said that a nail driven through a piece of wood was placed behind the tyre of the car and when it was backed the nail pierced the tyre and punctured it. Mr. C. F. Treadwell said Larkman was with other boys and the act was more in the nature of m’» hief. Mr. Salmon said there v. as far too
much of this class of mischief in Wanganui. A fine of 10s was imposed with costs in each charge. Frank Gatfield was charged with discharging a .303 rifle without reasonable cause so near to Smithfield Road as to endanger passers-by on March 25. A fine of £l, with costs 10s, was imposed Gatfield stated that he fired the rifle at a post to clean it and the bullet hit a rail and glanced off. Sergeant Cosgrave said the bullet penetrated a wall of a house in the locality and dropped on the floor of a lavatory.
