FASTER SERVICE
NEW PLYMOUTH-AUCKLAND RUN RAIL-CAR TO MARTON NEW SERVICE TO-MORROW. Beginning to-morrow, the present New Plymouth-Auckland express will be replaced by a rail-car connecting at Marton with the Wellington-Auckland Limited express.
Introduced by the Railways Department with the object of giving speedier service, the new time-table will clip a number of hours from the long run. Since slips on the Strat-ford-Main Trunk line had forced trains to Auckland to use the Marton route, passenger traffic has dropped considerably, and it is considered that a rail-car will be adequate for the service, at t'.ie same time providing more economical running. It is believed that the cars will be similar to those at present on the New Ply-mouth-Wellington service.
The present steam train service, the last train of which ran yesterday (Monday), left New Plymouth at 7.10 p.m., arriving at Auckland well into the afternoon. The proposed railcar service will leave New Plymouth at 6.5 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, arriving at Marton at 10.35 p.m., where it will connect with the Wellington-Auckland Limited, which leaves Marton at 10.58 p.m. and arrives in Auckland at 9.30 a.m. The return journey will be made on the Auckland-Wellington express, leaving Auckland at 7.15 p.m. Passengers arrive in New Plymouth in the rail-car from Marton at 10.23 a.m.,
three hours earlier than the present service. I The rail-car will stop at Lepperton, I Inglewood, Stratford, Eltham, Hawera. Patea and Waverley only, to pick uf passengers for stations north of Martion on the Main Trunk line. No othet passengers will be carried. Owing tc limited space, passengers on the railcar will be able to carry only a restricted amount of luggage but any that the car is unable to accommodate may be sent via the 8.25 a.m. New Plymouth-Well.' egton express, from which it will be collected at Marton by northbound trains. A single booking fee will reserve seats for the entire journey. (The service is to be run while the Stratford line is undergoing repair).
