POPULARITY OF HEREFORD CATTLE

Sir, —Possibly a world's record was established many years ago when the late “Mr. Thowld Grant” offered for sale “Idracowra,” “Glen Helen,” and “Macumba” Stations, with 15,000 Herefords, book muster, at 2s 6d per head. The Bank of New Zealand bought them at 10s. The cattle with unbranded calves, turned up in excess of stipulated numbers, while other breeds went under to a minimum in the worst drought known to white men! Just recently the owners of “Undoolya” Station. near Alice Springs, purchased 22 head of pedigree Polled Herefords, railing them 2000 miles to the terminus. The recent Sydney Show reports Herefords top price 735gn5., Shorthorns 350gns., and Polled Angus 175gns.—I am. etc., JOSEPH CARWARDINE. Westmere.
