COMMUNIST HUNT
RETURNED SOLDIERS IN DUNEDIN NATIONAL DEFENCE CORPS SUGGESTED I Per Prwis Association ] DUNEDIN, April 12. What might be described as a Communist hunt was initiated by the Dunedin branch of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association at a meeting attended by representatives of local bodies, political and sporting organisations. Suggestions for combating Com-
munist activities included the formation of a national defence corps comprising returned soldiers equipped on • a war footing and ready to march at | 24 hours’ notice. Some favoured strict | enforcement of the war emergency i regulations, prevention of meetings! and distribution of undesirable litera- i ture. From trade unions came a sug-1 gestion that the influence of small | Communist sections in unionism j could be overcome if saner members . who favoured constitutional action | could be persuaded to take as keen ’ an interest in union affairs as Com-: munis ts. Discussion was referred to the re-1 spective organisations represented. j
