Removal of Debris. The removal of the large slips, east of Tangarakau and the clearing of the long No. 9 and No. 10 tunnels have been completed. By No. 9 tunnel the track has been moved over to enable a work train to dispose of spoil but it will be quickly replaced. There are still large quantities of silt in both tunnels, which will have to be completely reballastcd, but that work was already scheduled for in a maintenance programme. The speed restrictions that will operate when goods tra, ffic resume i will make the trip between Stratford and the main Trunk a long one, although good time will be possible from Tahora west. The permanent way has suffered no material damage, but the Tahora-Haeo section, wnere a 25 miles per hour restriction has always existed and on which a patrol has proceeded very night train in rainy weather since the line was opened for through traffic, will provide work for the next six months for 50 or 60 men removing spoil that heavy rain will cause to slip again.
