WHANGAREI CUP
Excellent Autumn Fields INTERESTING CONTESTS PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY (Special to "Chronicle”) AUCKLAND, April 11. What promises to be a very successful fixture opens at Whangarei tomorrow, with the northern club’s autumn meeting, which concludes on Saturday. The going has been eased considerably by autumn rains and conditions should be perfect. Betting will be on the win-and-place method system, and the fields to-morrow are such as to ensure three place dividends. Of the dozen engaged in the principal race, the Mclnnes Memorial Handicap, the issue can be narrowed down to Jack Tar, Namara, Clipper, Ivy Willonyx and Philcourt in the first half of the handicap, and Rarotonga and Silver Cloud in the second half. Perhaps Ivy Willonyx and Clipper will be the best on the day. A first-class field of sprinters will parade for the open sprint, the Stewards’ Handicap, and Corato, Maxam, Miss Te Koura, Brizalian, Trilliarch and Merry Vaals seem to be the pick of this fine array of talent. Merry Vaals and Corato should give backers a fine run for their money. The third open event to-morrow is the Waipu Handicap, and this may see a fine duel between Silver Eagle and Land Girl. The Hurdles field is very strong in quality, with the Enjoyment —High Delight bracket, Glen Abb, Bachelor King, Dauber and Eastern Heir—all winners except High Delight, who has started twice over the sticks for two seconds—lively to provide a thrilling exhibition. All the other events also hold out prospects of excellent racing and so a successful day’s sport should be witnessed. Form horses for to-morrow are:— Portland Hack. Esquire, Tellsom, Hunter’s Rose. Trial Stakes. —Auburn Lad, Tea Lass, Akanora. Mclnnes Memorial Handicap. Ivy Willonyx, Clipper, Jack Tar. Northland Hurdles. Enjoyment or High Delight (bracket), Glen Abb, Dauber. Steward’s Handicap.—Corato, Merry Vaals, Maxam. Settlers’ Plate. Valley Maid, Red Falcon, General Riske. Maungatapere Hack. British Banner, Mercury Bay, Clinch.
