POLITICAL ACTION

SOCIAL CREDIT MOVEMENT NOT CONTESTING AUCKLAND WEST SEAT PRESIDENT’S STATEMENT “The New Zealand Social Credit Movement wishes to inform all enquirers regarding its political intentions that, since it is not a political party, it will not contest the Auckland West seat rendered vacant by the death of the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, late Prime Minister,” said Mr. R. O. C. Marks, of Wanganui, president of the Social Credit Movement of New Zealand (Inc.), in an interview yesterday. “Furthermore,” he continues, "it considers official support of any candidate for the seat inopportune at the present juncture.” He further stated: "But the movement hereby asserts its determination, as an educational organisation, to oppose the Government’s policy of heavy taxation, and to advocate that State control of credit and curtency. already provided for by recent legislation of the Savage Government, be exercised forthwith as an effective means of progressively reducing taxation and the cost of living, and of abolishing the monstrous debt system of finance, besides enabling New Zealand to give greater assistance to the Empire in the war. "As a political force,” he said, “the movement, contending that true democracy must be based on the personal responsibility of each Parliamentary representative to his own constituency, wishes to inform the people of New Zealand that at the next elections it will give its official support to Social Credit candidates who stand independent of party, but pledged to obey the will of their own particular electors, whenever that will is clearly expressed. The movement intends, in this way, to take action in many, if not all, constituencies in the next Parliamentary elections.”
