CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF IN SOUTH

PLAY AT BALMACEWEN DEFENDER OF TITLE REACHES FINAL [ Per Preai Association ] DUNEDIN, March 25. Perfect weather, splendid course conditions and top-class golf, characterised the quarter-finals and semifinals of the South Island and Otago provincial championship tournament at Balmacewen yesterday. The defender of the South Island title, B. V. Wright, of Roxburgh, reached the final again by beating the brilliant young P. J. Gill, of Otago Club, 3 and 2, and F. W. Dixon (St. Clair), 2 and 1. Dixon had beaten Dr. K. Ross, Otago, 3 and 2 in the Quarter-final and started the semi-final by losing three of the first four holes to Wright. Then he staged a great recovery and won three conscutive holes with birdies to be square after the seventh. He won the ninth and turned one up. Wright squared the match at the 13th. and Dixon's mistakes enabled his consistent accuracy to earn its reward. He completed the round in 69 and Dixon in 72. T. B. Ferguson (Otago), eliminated J. N. Lemon (Otago), 3 and 2 and went on to avenge his defeat in last year's Otago final by the youthful T. W. Wright (Otago). The latter beat S. H. McKechnie (St. Clair). 2 and 1, but was out-generalled by Ferguson, who kept behind him off the tee, approached brilliantly and had Wright straining to be inside him. He won well over the second half and finished the round in 70 to Wright’s 72. Otago Plate finalists are J. A. Scouler (Otago), and W. W. Clayton (St. Clair). AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIP ’ YOUNG TAKES THE TITLE [ Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND. March 25. The final of the Auckland provincial golf championship was won by J. H. Young (Titirangi), who defeated Burgess (Hamilton), 2 up. Young played excellent golf throughout and led the qualifiers with two brilliant rounds of 73.
