SUCCESS OF SYLT RAID CONFIRMED

Received March 24, 6.3'| p.m. LONDON, March 23. An Air Ministry communique states that Royal Air Force observation planes confirmed the success of the Sy It raid, but photographs are unsatisfactory because of atmospheric conditions and the inability of the planes to approach close enough in face of German anti-aircraft guns and fighters. GERMAN EFFORT TO HIDE DAMAGE RESTRICTED AREAS VISITED BY PRESSMEN. [ Briti.ii Ofteial Wiralaas. ) Received March 24, 6.30 p.m. RUGBY, March 23. The extent of the damage done in the raid by the R.A.F. on Sylt is still being minimised by the German radio broadcasts and much is made of reports of a conducted tour of inspection by representatives of three American news agencies. These, however, suggest that the areas visited were restricted and carefully selected and the Columbia Broadcasting Company's Berlin representative commented: "It is significant that the newspapermen were allowed to inspect only one of the several bases.” In this connection the similarity and carefully-guarded nature of the visiting correspondents’ reports is commented upon in the British Press. No further information regarding the damage is forthcoming from British sources.
