COMPLIMENTARY DANCE. MEMBERS OF SECOND ECHELON. (Own Correspondent.) OHAKUNE, March 23. A complimentary dance and farewell was held in the Majestic Hall last evening in honour of Messrs. Cummings, D. Parr, Taylor, Kennedy, Nott, Blinkinsop, Forster, Adams, Collins Gcraon and Small, of Ohakune and surrounding districts, who are leaving . with the Second Echelon. There was a large attendance and the men were given a rousing reception. The evening was spent with dancing and various items, and community singing of patriotic choruses led by Mr. J. H. Hardie, who also introduced various speakers. His Worship the Mayor, Mr. H. Delamar, in speaking on behalf of those present, said that he was pleased to have as guests of honour these young men of the district who were sailing with the Second Echelon. The spirit that animated them in answering their country’s call was deserving of the highest commendation. In concluding the remarks, he wished them all a safe return to New JZealand. Mrs W. F. He stressed the urgency of the crises we were passing through, and trusted that the worthy action of these lads, who were offering their services to the country, would set an example to provide an inspiration to other young men. Mrs. Leckie also added a few remarks appropriate to the occasion. A presentation of gifts to those present, was then made by His Worship the Mayor. Apologies were tendered for the absence of Messrs. Cummings, Foster, Adam and Collins. The presentation to them was handed to relatives who were present. At the conclusion of the presentation “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows’’ was sung, followed by three rousing cheers for the departing boys. The Glee Club of the Women’s Institute rendered a series of items which were heartily applauded.
