LIVESTOCK MARKETS

STEADY VOLUME OF TRADE PRICE LEVELS MAINTAINED. ENQUIRY FOR DAIRY HEIFERS. The Farmers' Co-op. in (heir weeklyreport of the livestock market advise that with most of the season’s sheep requirements now lulllled other sections are now being given more consideration. For example, dairy heifers for next season are now sought after and numerous sales have been made for both 2 and 3-year-olds for immediate delivery and/or May and June, and values, according to quality, range from 9 to 10 guineas. More business in weaner heifers is also reported. The majority of sales have been the annual heifer fairs conducted at auction, and all well-grown good quality sorts are selling freely. Quotations; Best condition weaners, good type and quality £5; medium cattle, £4 10s to £4 ss; inferior and crossbred kinds £2 upwards. The latter classes are not so freely enquired for. An excellent sale of station-bred cattle was held at our Waverley yards last week, when an entry of some 400 head came forward and changed hands at very satisfactory values. Same consisted chiefly of 24 and 31-year-oid heifers in good forward conaition, for which buyers showed preference. There was also a medium ■ aiding ol sheep and store cattle (Jer- ...... oddments) which sold at values on a par with recent rates. Some of the main quotations are as follows:—Fat and forward Hereford heifers, £8 2s; fat P.A. cows, £B, £7 7s; fat and forward 31-year-old P.A. and Hereford heifers, £7 14s, £7 10s; fat and forward 21-year-old P. A. and Hereford heifers, £7 6s, £7 4s; lighter condition 21-year-old P.A. heifers, £5 18s; 18-months P.A. steers, £4 15s, £4 12s; 18-months P.A. heifers, £3 10s; empty P.A. cows, £5 15s to £6; 3-year-old mixed coloured steers, £7 ss; heavy works cows, £4 10s, £4 ss, £4; boner cows, £2 10s, £2 ss; fat Jersey cross cows, £5 8s; works bulls, £6 12s, £6 4s, £5 8s; lighter bulls, £4 10s to £4 6s; springing heifers, £7 10s; forward condition 6-tooth wethers, 21s 9d; smaller, 19s; 5-year-old-ewes, r.w. S.D. rams, 19s lOd; H.O. 2-tooth ewes from 23s 8d to 24s Id; smaller H.O. 2-tooth ewes, 19s 4d; ewe lambs, 18s; mixed sex lambs, 14s; cull lambs, 9s Id. Auction sales have constituted a good deal of the week's trading in Jersey oddments and competition has not waned in any way. There still remains an excellent range of values and with competition from exporters and graziers being strong this section shows ready clearances throughout, at values quite up to the good rates quoted last week. The fat sheep and fat cattle market shows some improvement on recent values and a guide to prices is as follows:—P.A. cow and heifer beef, £8 10s, £9 10s according to weight and quality; best finished Jersey beef, £7 to £7 10s; medium quality Jersey beef, £6; plainer and lighter Jersey beef. £5 10s; prime quality 4-tooth wethers, 25s to 265, medium quality, 255. No fat ewes are quoted.
