AT RICCARTON

Canterbury J.C. Autumn Meeting GREAT EASTER TO-DAY BRIEF REVIEW OF CARD With the Great Easter as the feature event, the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting will open today at Riccarton, the Great Autumn being the main attraction for to-mor-row, when the fixture is to conclude. Nowadays racing at Easter is so widespread in the Dominion that much interest has been taken from Riccarton, but the Champagne Stakes and the Challenge Stakes on the respective days assist to place the meeting high up among important engagements, and fields for to-day are, with the exception of the hurdle race, well up to metropolitan standard.. Many great horses figure on the list ot Great Easter winners, and the weight-carrying record is held by Machine Gun, who had 10.4 in the saddle in 1905, since when Arrowsmith, Razzle Dazzle, Grand Knight, Reremoana and Autopay have figured winner#. Nothing up te their standard is engaged to-day, but Haughty Winner, Nightcalm, Spanish Lad, Disdain. Globe Trotter, Duncannon, Flammarion, Density and Not out should be capable of staging a great contest. The Trentham form of Density, Flammarion and Not Out will draw attention to their chances. In the past three years the Champagne Stakes-Challenge Stakes “double” has gone to the credit of Royal Chief, Defaulter and Beaulivre respectively, but to-day there is not a two-year-old engaged up to the calibre of the trio named. However, Chary, Shikar, Absolve, Doria and Night Glass are promising juveniles. Win-and-place betting rules at Riccarton, and the following may appeal in their respective engagements today:— Kildare Hurdles.—Esperance Bay, Flashlight. Champagne Stakes. —Chary, Shikari, Doria. Courtnay Handicap.—Stylist, Dranoel, Omapo. Autumn Plate.—Scold, Rebellion, Cymric. Great Easter.—Density, Not Out, Flammarion. Russley Handicap.—Atreus, Don’t Forget, Cherry Bay. Sockburn Handicap.—Trench Law, Norseman, Thermidor. Papanui Handicap.—Areas, Plumage, Hearth. Following is the list of acceptors:— 12.2 KILDARE HURDLES (Of £3OO ; 11 miles.)
