FIGHTING SERVICES WELFARE FUND

TOTAL IN WANGANUI £3397 YESTERDAY'S LIST OF FURTHER DONATIONS Further donations to the Fighting Services’ Welfare Fund are acknowledged by the city treasurer of the fynd, Mr. F. B. Wylds, as under, this list bringing the total in the bank up

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE SUM OF £6OOO IN SIGHT NO EXPENSES AGAINST THE COLLECTED AMOUNTS. A meeting of the Wanganui central executive in charge of the collection of the Fighting Services appeal was held last night, presided over by Lieutenant-Colonel F. K. Turnbull. With amounts still to be paid in, a sum of nearly £6OOO is in sight in the Wanganui district. The state of the fund, including all the contributions acknowledged through the "Chronicle” as having been received by the respective district treasurers, is as follows:

The assistant-secretary, Mr. J. M. Wells, reported that amounts in hand to be banked to-day in Wanganui will bring the city total up to about £3500 to-night. Marton has hopes of finishing with £lOOO. There are still more amounts to come in at Waverley. Tributes were paid last night to the collectors who had shouldered the work of making a straight-out appeal for donations. Appreciation was expressed of the work done by the Wanganui Savage Club. It was decided that the amounts collected and banked should be sent to Wellington free of expense, members of the executive agreeing among themselves to pay the out-of-pocket expenses of the appeal. Mr. H. M. Keesing mentioned that in several cases staffs of firms in the city had decided to make a contribution each pay-day. He referred to the Wanganui Furniture Manufacturing Company, where the staff had promised £l5 2s 6d by May 31. It was decided to recommend to all such contributors that the amounts still to come from this method of collection, be handed to whatever appeal is current. The Red Cross-St. John Ambulance appeal for sick and wounded soldiers would be the next appeal. A circular letter is to be drafted setting out the result of the Wanganui district appeal and this will be forwarded by the chairman to members of the committee set up by various local bodies at a public meeting when the appeal was launched
