Mr. Crosby said that in 1939 the following new certificates for swimming were presented to pupils in the board’s district:— 25 yards . .. 1485 50 yards 1072 220 yards 844 880 yards 479 Total certificates 3880 The following certificates for lifesaving were presented during the year: Primary 251 Elementary 188 Intermediate 3 88 Bronze Medallions 18 Total awards . 645 In a special report, Mr. Crosby reported that 1400 children from Wanganui primary schools had attended a screening of the film “It’s Easy to Swim” at the Regent Theatre on February 16, when a lecture was delivered by Mr. D. Jillet, of Ihe staff of the Wanganui Intermediate School. He was impressed with the effect of the film in showing every stage in the process of learning to swim in a way even the youngest child could grasp. Mr. Jillet deserved credit for the , clearness and lucidity of his explana- , lion. Appreciation of the splendid rc- . suits achieved in Wanganui was expressed by the chairman, Mr. E. F. Hemingway. <
