A request for the closing of the school was received from the committee, which said that the roll number had decreased to 16 and pointed out that the cleaning of the building cost, the committee £5O a year. Planetary Conjunction. In the early evening in the western sky Venus and Jupiter, the two brightest celestial bodies, are making a remarkably fine spectacle at the present time. They are in close conjunction and will remain so for the next few nights, although their closest approach to each other occurred about 10 a.m. yesterday. The two planets set about 8.30 p.m., but for an hour or so before then they are very conspicuous. Clubroom for Motorists. That a large room in the Wakefielu Chambers had been leased and would be used as a clubroom for members when furnished, was reported at last night’s meeting of the executive of the Automobile Association (Wanganui). It was .stated that the room would be tastefully decorated and would prove a boon for country members and the members of other associations visiting the city. The clubroom will be op<fl; within the next three months. Forest and Birds. A donation of £1 was received from Dr. E. E. Porritl, of Wanganui, at yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui Education Board with a request that it should be used to enrol 20 boys in schools near the city as members of the New Zealand Forest and Bird Protection Society. It was decided to send a letter of thanks to Dr. Porritt for his example. “This society is doing wonderful work in New Zealand," commented the chairman, Mr. E. F. Hemingway. The allocation of the money was left in the hands of the secretary. Holidays lor Schools. A number of applications for holidays for primary schools for various functions were received at yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui Education Board. The applications approved were: February 28 for the Rangitikei Schools’ Sports Association’s annual sports at Marton; Wednesday, March 6, and Thursday, March 7, half-holi-days for the Wanganui Centennial celebrations; March 29, annual sports meeting at Cook’s Gardens of the Wanganui Primary Schools’ Amateur Athletic Association; April 5, Patea and District Schools’ Sports Association’s annual meeting at Patea. A.A. Membership. The secretary, Mr. F. J. Hill, reported to last night’s meeting of the executive of the Automobile Association (Wanganui) that 96 new members were elected in December and 6J in January, making the total membership at the end of the month 4528. Mr. N. R. Bain contended that the membership of the association should be increased, as many motoi ists were receiving, without cost, benefits of the work of the association. The president, Mr A. S. Buigcss, said that the membership had been increased from 2500 to 4528, and thq objective was 5000. When that figure was reached, which he hoped would be soon, the association would set a new goal for the membership. Trout Catches at Taupo. With very few anglers in the Taupo district, fishing is rather quiet. Until Monday there has been a strong southerly wind. Master G. Wardell, of Hamilton, fishing at the mouth of the Waitahanui, landed the heaviest fish so far this season. It weighed just on 1111 b., and took an hour to land. A (Maori, Mr. Kapua, also at the mouth, landed a fish of 101 b. Mr. J. Longtsaff and Mr. A. Morris, of Hastings, fishing in the Waitahanui River, took 16 fish lover the week-end. The best weighed ' 71b. Also in the river Mr. A. Bow, of [ Auckland, landed eight fish, including [one just under 71b, Mrs. Bow took (four, the heaviest being 61b. Mr. F. | Cox, of Auckland, took five fish from Wall’s Pool. Mr. J. Drake, of Wanganui, camped at the Four-Mile Bay, has been averaging four fish a day, weighing up to 7ilb. Mr. Ashby, of Auckland, also at the Four-Mile Bay, ‘took five fish, including one of 7ilb.
