The most important trap-shooting event ever held in New Zealand was ihe 1940 Southern Hemisphere singlerise clay-bird championship, decided to-day at the centennial t rap-shooting tournament of the New Zealand Gun Clubs’ Association, It was a 50-target event, all off 18 yards, in which 74 (competed. The winner was C. Webber (Morrinsville), who made lhe perfect score of 50. The runner-up, M. Pratt (Ot.orohanga) broke 49. Thct? were no scores of 48, but 4 7 targets were broken by W. Oates (Tokomaru Bay), J. Mills (Hastings), 1. G. Watkins (Rangiora). Next best, with 46, were A. N. Turner (Christchurch), C. E. Thomasen (Waitakururu), G. ißretherton (Masterton), and H. Grenncll (Port Levy). Webber received £74 cash Irom lhe sweepstake, a trophy order value £lB 10s, and the championship silk sash. Pratt received £37 cash and a trophy order value £9 ss. J. Mills, W. Oates and Watkins each received £l2
6s Bd. Presenting the trophies, the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, congratulated Webber on his perfect performance. He said Pratt was one of the most consistent shots in New Zealand and a good sportsman. The £1 sweepstake attracted 45 competitors. The conditions were 15 targets from handicap marks on the five-track system. Possibles were broken by E. Groome (Otane) and C. E. Brown (Diamond Harbour). Each received £l5 6s cash. J. Dobson (Hamilton), H. Grcnnell (Port Levy), L. Smith (Hutt), H. Carter (Ot.orohanga) and A. Walker (Hawera) each broke 14 and divided £5 8s between them.
