SALE IN FEILDING KEEN DEMAND FOR ROMNEYS FEILDING, Jan. 17.
The foremost slud sheep breeders of both islands were represented in the offering of more than 250 stud Southdowns and Romney rams in Feilding yesterday, when the Manawatu and West Coast Stud Sheepowners’ Association held its annual sale. A crowded bench of buyers representative of all parts of New Zealand was present. The demand for Southdowns was patchy, most purchasers showing a fancy for a particular type of sheep and breeding, although other rams of apparently equal conformation but different breeding, sold cheaply. The most successful Southdown vendor was Mr. IT. J. Andrew, Maheno. Otago, who obtained the top price of 65 guineas, the purchaser of this ram being W. H. Gimblett and Sons, Hastings. The second highest price was 60 guineas, paid for a ram bred by Mr. J. Knight. Feilding. Of the 48 stud Southdowns offered, only 15 were sold under the hammer, the average price for these being a little over 36-1 guineas. Several rams were sold later by private treaty.
