MARTON NEWS

MAGISTRATE’S COURT TRAFFIC BREACHES The final sitting of the Magistrate’s Court in Marton before the Christmas recess was held on Wednesday afternoon. Mr. R. M. Watson presided. Before Court, proceedings commenced Mr. K. A. Williams, on behalf of the bar, took the opportunity to extend the magistrate the compliments of the season and sincerely hoped that his strenuous work next year would not be as arduous as had ber.t the case this year. Mr. Watson, in reciprocating the season’s greetings, extended thanks to the practitioners for their assistance during the last twelve months, on behalf of himself, the police, Justices of the Peace and the Clerk of the Court. In the following cases, the traffic inspector, Mr. M. J. Hartigan, prosecuted: — George Glenday pleaded guilty by letter to the charge of failing to signal when driving out from the kerb at Bulls, and was fined 15s, costs 10s. The magistrate said that not onlymust the signal be given, but the driver must be satisfied that traffic seen observed it. For operating a heavy motor-vehicle with the classification plates mutilated cost Thomas Glasgow 30s, costs 3s. Mr. Hartigan said he had previously warned Glasgow of the condition of the plates. On the defended charge of having no inspection certificate, a fine of 15s, costs 12s was imposed. Mr. K. A. wfijiams appeared for Mr. Glasgow. Transfer of Motor Number Plates An old car was bought in Marton for £7 10s and towed to Bulls. It was in. good order but had no warrant of fitness. It had 1938-39 registration number plates affixed so the purchaser went to Mr. J. H. Shepherd's garage at. Bulls and removed without authority from an old truck belonging to Mr. L. M. Richards, plates for the current year, number H—19.349. The truck was useless and was abandoned in a yard at Bulls, the vehicle having been involved in an accident. On November 4 Constable Bowley saw the car and found the 1938-39 plates on, over which were placed the heavy traffic licence plates, but the letter H had been bent back and could not be seen. Arising out of this schoolboy escapade, as it was designated by Mr. R. G. Palmer, who appeared for defendant, a youth, Seymour Lyttelton Eaton, aged 18 years, appeared in the Marton Court yesterday on four charges. The fines imposed by the magistrate, Mr. R. M. Watson, totalled £5, costs £2. The charges were: (1) Using other than assigned licensed number plates; (2) unlawful conversion of licenseu number plates; (3) using unlicensed motor-vehicle; (4) having no warrant of fitness for motor-car. With the exception of charge 2 pleas of guilty were entered. Further evidence submitted by the police who conducted the case showed that neither Richards nor Shepherd had given Eaton authority to convert the plates and did not know they had been taken until they were returned. The defence submitted by Mr Palmer was purely technical. The magistrate said the conversion charge could easily have been one of theft. The police had been very lenient. If defendant had killed someone there might have been considerable trouble due to the wrong number plates. On the first charge the penalty was £3, costs 10s. On the second the magistrate said that in the circumstances of the other fines he would enter a conviction and ordered defendant to pay 10s costs. On each ;of the other charges defendant was lined £l, costs in each instance being 110 s. BOWLING NOTES i The open pairs championship is proj cejding slowly at the Marton green and at the present time Goebel and Humphries are leading with six wjns and one loss. RANGITIKEI CRICKET SATURDAY’S MATCHES Besides the Arkwright Shield cricket match at Marton on Saturday between the junior players of the Porew-a and Old Boys Clubs, there will be a senior match between a Rangitikei eleven and the Wanganui Club. At the Rangitikei Cricket Association meeting on Tuesday night, permission was given the secretary, Mr. C. S. Beechey, to arrange this match, provided the usual ground levy of 10s was paid. The match is to commence at 1.30 p.m. sharp. Players desirous j of a game are asked to notify Mr. C. S. Beechey. MARTON CIVIC THEATRE "THE KID COMES BACK" Wayne Morris’ new picture, “The Kid Comes Back," which is showing to-night at the Civic Theatre, brings j to the screen something new in the way of prize fight pictures. And this is not strange considering that Morris has made something of a name lor himself as a tradition breaker. "The Kid Comes Back” is a light picture, but a new kind of fight picture. For once the hero doesn’t win the championship. And what's more he is knocked colder than an iceberg by his biggest rival. “The Affair of Annabel” The troubles of a film star who indulges in publicity stunts to popularise her pictures, forms the hilarious framework of “The Affairs of Annabel,” showing to-night at the Civic Theatre. This new screen comedy, launching a popular series embodying the comical adventures of the title character, has Lucille Ball sharing fun honours with Jack Oakie as the fasttalking Press agent who devises the exploits which invariably plunge the star into rousing, hectic complications. Alleged Intoxication Remarking that the circumstances of the case were rather unusual, the magistrate (Mr. R. M. Watson) imposed a fine of £lO with costs 10s, but did not cancel the licence of Laurence Stanley Stewart, driver and sprayer, who was charged with being intoxicated while in charge of a motorvehicle. The magistrate warned Stewart that in future he must not mix benzine and liquor.
