It has been decided by the Wanga-' i nui City Council, on the recommenaa- • I tion of its Works Committee, that the I use of water from existing hydrants I in Parsons Street, Fitzherbert Avenue and Fox Road be granted for the extinguishing of fires in Ihe Waitotara ' County area adjacent thereto, an annual fee of £l2 10s to be charged. The danger of fires in the county area referred to has given rise to discussion at a meeting of the Wanganui Fire Board, and has been brought before the County Council. On H.M.S. Achilles. Still another Wanganui boy, mak- j ing six in all, is aboard H.M.S. | Achilles, the British cruiser which participated in the naval action in 1h(. I South Atlantic last week and resulted in the scuttling of the German pocket battleship Graf Spee. He is Mr. Raymond Higgson, a former pupil at the Wanganui Technical College. Hi.s people now live in Rotorua. Writing to a friend in Wanganui, he said that the place the Achilles was at, at the time (late September), had a climate similar to that at Christchurch. His letter was well censored.
