Meteorological Office, Wellington. Wednesday, December 20, 3 p.m. General Situation. An anti-cyclone extends from Chatham Island across the North Island, while a depression is passing in the south. Forecast —Winds: Light and variable in the northern half of the North Island, otherwise moderate to strong north-westerlies predominating but changing at times to south-westerly in the south. Seas ‘New Zealand waters): Rather rough south of Cape Egmont and about Cook and Foveaux Straits, slight to moderate elsewhere. Eastern Tasman Sea: Fresh to strong weMerly winds and rather rough seas in the southern portion, moderate westerly winds and moderate seas elsewhere. Weather: For the most part fair. Unsettled, however, in western and southern portions of the South Island with scattered showers extending later to Wellington and Taranaki. Temperatures warm in the east and north, mild elsewhere.
