SOLDIER ON FINAL LEAVE

BOY’S PLUCKY RESCUE OF COMPANION’ ( Ter Press Association J TAUMARUNUI, Dec. 19. Freedom John Valentine Coombes. aged 21, lance-corporal on final leave from Papakura, was drowned in the Wanganui River at Tewhakarae, a few miles from Taumarunui. Deceased was swimming across the river with a boy, Richard Woolston, aged nine, on his back, when he was attacked by cramp and sank. The brother of the boy, Alan Woolston, aged 12. re-cued Richard and then recovered Coombes’ body speedily after considerable effort. He tried artificial resuscitation unsuccessfully. At an inquest a verdict of accidental drowning was returned. The coroner commended the bravery of Alan Woolston and said he would ’.(•commend him for the Humane Society’s decoration.
