FUNCTION IN LONDON LONDON, Nov. 10. A n afternoon reception was held by the New Zealand Society at the Saivoy Hotel on November 7 in honour of the deputy-Prime Minister of New Zealand, the Hon. P. Fraser. The High Commissioner for New Zealand (president of the society) received the guests, with Mrs. Jordan, j Mr. Jordan introduced Mr. Fraser, referring Io his value and ability as a statesman and as a man. “Although 13,000 miles away,” Mr. Fraser remarked, “the people of New Zealand stand by the principles of democracy, the free expression of individuals and the self-determination of nations. I and my colleagues are here to see how' best we can aid in the common struggle, for we know that if the British Commonwealth collapsed the entire social fabric we have built up would be destroyed.” He was impressed by the way the British people are going about the war—“not with joy or heartlessness but, although sad at heart because the inevitable day had arrived, with a calm determination they have entered in a struggle because they believe in the cause of liberty and the progress of mankind.”
