LAWN TENNIS
INELIGIBLE AS AMATEURS GENE MAKO AND SABIN U.S.A. DAVIS CUP STARS Received Dec. 7, 9.30 p.m. NEW YORK, Dec. 6. The American Lawn Tennis Association announces that Gene Mako and W. Sabin have been declared ineligible for amateur tennis because of alleged violations of amateur regulations. Both are American Davis Cup stars. The suspension is temporary, pending final executive action on February 9. Both are accused of violating the regulations, firstly, with receiving living and other expenses from tennis organisations for over eight weeks in 1939 and, secondly, with receiving travelling expenses in excess of the amounts the association approved. The chairman, Mr. Louis J. Carruthers, said the association had not previously devreed temporary suspension. Tilden and others were suspended permanently, but authority was granted In February to suspend temporarily.
