KEESING CUP
RETAINED ON A MEASURE CHALLENGE BY WANGANUI EAST ENDS IN TIE. One of the keenest games of bowls played for many a long day took place when a Wanganui East rink played Wanganui in a challenge match for the Keeping Cup on the Wanganui green on Monday. The trophy was retained on a measure, Wanganui East requiring six to win on the last head, or five to tie. The team got five, the sixth bowl being a quarter of an inch out in the measure. Three heads before the end Wanganui had a lead of 21 to 11 and the cup looked certain to remain where it was. Wanganui East crept up, however, getting a two and three. That left the challenging team requiring six to win, five to tie, the board reading Wanganui 21, Wanganui East 16. Wanganui established a lead when the last head was played, but Haworth, the Wanganui East skip, killed it. In the replay Haworth lay three when the skips came into action. The fourth was doubtful and regarded as a good measure by the challengers. Haworth drew two more and thus had a certain five, perhaps six! It was in a very ton r atmosphere that the measure was made. The sixth bowl was just outside and the cup remained with Wanganui on a tie, 21 all. The rinks were:— Wanganui (holder of the trophy): G. N. Boulton (lead>, W. J. Stone (two), S. J. Goodey (three), J. Engebretsen (skip). Wanganui East.—P. Rush (lead), H. Stewart (two), W. Raine (three), C. Haworth (skip). The next challenge match for the Keesing Cup will be played early next week, the challengers being the Cosmopolitan Bowling Club.
